Nice rundown... I did have to fix this for you though.

I don't know if it's just my town, but Kmart is currently offering the 40GB PS3 for $600 instead of $700. Anyone seen this anywhere else?
I just downloaded Beats, and it comes highly recommended for music-rhythm game fans.

It's your standard DDR type fare (press buttons in time with the music), but you can use any MP3 on your memory stick - the game analyses the MP3 and determines when to prompt you to press a particular button. The timing isn't 100% perfect, but it's hard to describe how much more satisfying it is to pick the tunes from your own music library.

Why do cinemas not get picked on for not showing X rated films then?
'

There's a big difference between an X-rating and an R-rating.

Movies: G, PG, M, MA15+, R18+, X18+

Games: G, PG, M, MA15+

Well, I think, we have Advance Wars coming out; that's not an M rated game, but it's certainly not Pokémon.
Asked about M-rated games, and Advance Wars is the the only title that springs to mind? He could have at least given a nod to RE4 or Umbrella Chronicles.

And we feel like we should give everybody the chance to play the kind of games that they want.
...unless they're rated AO by the ESRB.

That's not a dig at Nintendo - Sony has the same policy, and it stinks.

Eh? I was under the impression that this game came out a couple of years ago. The fact I have the Gold edition confirms this.
It may be that it's a "Gamer's Choice" that hasn't been listed correctly. I haven't had time to check it up.

And yes, the 15th is a placeholder date for games without confirmed dates. It's fairly standard for retailers/publishers to use it, since their system has to have a number, and it requires the least deviation (that is, if they used the 31st as the placeholder, the game being released on the 4th would have made the date more inaccurate than if it'd been listed as the 15th).

It usually only applies to games that are months off.

The fact that both are having problems makes it less material for a flame war than if we just reported on say, the 360 issues or PS3 issues alone. icon_smile.gif
Plus the fact that Ubisoft were very careful to do the same. I can imagine them getting more than a few harsh words if someone in the development team was bad-mouthing one of the two companies' systems. Even EA had to be diplomatic about the PS3 version of Madden running at 30fps on the PS3 with a kind of "Our bad. We understand if you don't want to get it, no biggie" disclaimer.

I think we can all take heart that gaming has reached the point where we can actually sit down and debate issues like this.

The Bioshock/Little Sister situation provoked its share of controversy, but inspired as much in the way of intelligent discussion about moral choices and the repurcussions of those choices, both in the game world and in the conscience of the player... (I loved hearing about the journalist whose g/f made him sleep on the couch after watching him cold-heartedly harvest one icon_razz.gif )

Who would have thought we'd be sitting here having these discussions back when we were in dimly lit arcades, fleeing ghosts and saving the world from pixellated invaders from space?
The problem with Rockstar's argument - "The BBFC allows adults the freedom to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in movies" - is that I don't believe it's true.

The examples people always give are films like Hostel and Saw, but if you were to sit down and catalog the violence in those films (as censors likely do), it would probably only account for 5% of the film's runtime.

If a film were released which was nothing but the worst that horror films have to offer, non-stop for 120 minutes... I don't know that the BBFC would give that a rating.

Another point to raise is that Clive Barker's Jericho has as much (if not more) gore than any horror film I've ever been witness to, and that hasn't been banned.

Edit: Hostel should have been banned for wasting 107 minutes of my life. Damn that movie sucked. icon_razz.gif

Sure, it is a lot to pay just to play the game, but you are getting the camera which is something that will be used in a number of other games in the future, plus it can be used as a webcam.
I think the Eye has a lot more potential than the EyeToy simply because digital downloads enable developers to make short, crazy games and offer them to everyone with a PS3 for $5-$10, rather than the EyeToy pricing model, where you'd get maybe one or two minigame compilations a year for full price, usually packed in with the camera you already own.

Whatever happened to Conan PS3?
It was supposed to have been out already, so I'd expect it to show up this week sometime. Seems to be happening a lot lately.

Unreal Tournament has been delayed on PS3, dunno why its still listed as November.
We haven't received a revised release date for UT3, which is why it's still listed for November. Epic are still aiming for this year, so it's possible it could make it.

For "first-time" casual gamers, BC isn't an issue at all. They don't even know what it is. However, I doubt they are a large slice of the industry these days.
I wouldn't say sale trends support that, when you consider sales of the Wii and the DS, especially given that the Wii has already surpassed GameCube sales here in Australia. It's ironic in a way that in the case of the system with the best backwards compatibility, the feature is all but a non-issue for the majority of its purchasers from here on out.

The sales charts will be the defining factor. If sales of the 40GB exceed the sales of the 60GB model, then that's proof positive that a cheaper price tag is more important to consumers than backwards compatibility.

They wanted to be able to play their games, so why not pay a bit extra and get access to a whole lot of new games as well? I'd say this was a significant factor in PS2 sales for many casual gamers.
I think we're talking about different segments of the market here. When I say "casual," I mean the mainstream market, who wouldn't be making the kind of informed decision you mentioned.

I'm talking about Mrs. Brown who wants to buy one of those new-fangled games consoles for little Billy for Christmas, and looks at a maximum of 3 things - the name on the box, the price tag and maybe a few of the games. And then buys a Wii; fully unaware of the fact that it's backwards compatible with GameCube games. Because that's how she rolls.
To be honest, I can categorically say that the backwards compatibility of the PS3 was a major reasoning behind my purchase, as I was ADAMANT that I be able to play all my PS2 games.

Since then, I've played Shadow of the Colossus for about 5 minutes to test out the upscaling, and never again since.

As far as casual consumers go, I'd say the majority aren't even aware that any of their consoles are backwards compatible, especially in regards to the Wii. So this seems like the perfect way for Sony to lower the cost of the system to make it more attractive for people who wouldn't know the difference in the first place.

For my money, I'd hope the back catalog of Playstation 2 games is always available, but as downloadable titles, ala the Wii Virtual Console. A copy of ICO is hard enough to track down as it is...

Edit: All that said, $700 still far exceeds the value perception of casual gamers by a magnitude of several hundred dollars.

Ummm... not really, since the PS2 has been out slightly longer than the other two.
I think he meant that the 360 would have to sell at a much faster rate than it currently is. At the rate that it's sold so far (about 5 million a year?), it'd have to be supported for another 20 years to reach total PS2 sales. That's if Sony EVER stop making the things...

Dstore.com.au has the 40GB model listed as being on "Back Order," and has the following "features."

40GB Hard Drive 2 USB Slots No Flash Memory Slots Not Backwards Compatible with PS2 Software Black Finish.

If it really does lack the backwards compatibility, it's hard to say how much that would affect people's decision to buy it.

I heard one woman on the eBay forums say that she'd been told by someone that the Wii could play GameCube games, and she thought there was no WAY that could be true. Companies wouldn't let games from other systems work on THEIR system!

Any idea when Sam & Max Season One comes out? I've checked everywhere in Geelong and can't find a copy. It was meant to be out last week but a guy at EB told me it had been pushed back.
It's supposed to be out, but it's on Back Order at Dstore.. but not delayed, apparently. They might just have a limited amount of stock, so keep checking back.

What are the first two games I quoted about?
Without going to the effort of doing another web search, I remember them being exactly what they sound like - a simple set of mini-games designed squarely for children. To which I can only say... It's about time! Kids love the DS, and it suprises me that it's taken this long for a developer to develop games with younger children in mind. Beats the heck out of those V-Tech monstrosities.

I never knew this (reading? pfft) and it seems a really odd thing to do (especially since a release could actually be on the 15th). There's surely gotta be a better way to do non-confirmed titles (32nd of October? 0th of October? XXth of October?).
Unfortunately, that's just how a lot of the dates are supplied. Some publishers/retailers need to have a number in their system, and they use the 15th, because there's less deviation if the date is earlier or later in the month. It's usually only for games that are a few months off - e.g. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 in March next year.
