Easy question - my favourite by far is The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I think it probably would have worked better if they'd actually made it as a spinoff series instead of suddenly-bizarro season 9. Sure, there are awful examples of spinoff series, but also great ones: it could go either way.

I suppose it's all a bit of a moot point now, though.

What's with the intense hate for Dante? I don't ever remember him as that much of a target. He's was just kind of... there. And don't punch McNulty. He's great. Mostly.
Well, I love McNulty, I truly do. He just has a face that begs to be punched. I don't even know why.

As for my intense hate for Dante, I don't know. I mean, I'm sure other people raised a vague eyebrow at him (as every character on the show cops from time to time) for some stuff he did, but mainly he just bugs me. Irrationally. I just really dislike him.
Just finished season 3 of The Wire, but JackSlack has asked that I hold off on season 4 until he's up to season 4 as well.

My overwhelming feelings at this point?

Quote
I had such a love-hate relationship with Stringer; if he had to die (which, of course he did), I'm glad it happened the way it did. FOr Omar. And for Mouzone.

I don't think I hate anyone on The Wire quite so much as I hated Dante in this season. I don't know why. And you know what? If (as I strongly suspect; why would Omar keep him around after that?) he doesn't come back in season 4, I dunno why I'm going to do with my rage at him. Channel it into wanting to punch McNulty, I guess. But seriously; that look Omar gave him when he picked him up from Mouzone? I was giving him the same look. As long as you could? Yeah, well. You tell that to Brandon.

Oh wait, you can't. He's dead.

Um... surely I had more thoughts than this...

Oh, Kima. Just... Kima. I had some sympathy for you but now, I just dunno.

And Prez! You beautiful little screw-up. I had such high hopes for you!

Also, frankly, the two most fascinating parts of season 3 were the political battle that was Hamsterdam, and Cutty (and hating Dante, but I don't think that counts). I don't have much to say about either, since they were both slowly developing fascinations rather than moments of D:, but I can say that they made season 3 way stronger than season 2. I'm hoping season 4 is as strong.
(Edited to fix my woefully bad spoiler text.)

Hm. The Wire question. Pure speculation stuff. But I'm curious.

If the Barksdale clan had just shot Brandon, nothing more, would Omar's campaign of revenge been less intense, or not?
I think it would have been different, not necessarily less. Let me elaborate.

Season one and two discussion wrote
When Brandon is first killed, Omar is pretty devastated, and of course, who wouldn't be? I think that would be the same either way; he clearly cared a lot about that poor little try-hard (and oh yes, Brandon was such a charming little try-hard, wasn't he? "Daaaanger." He would be my favourite season 1 character if a) Omar wasn't so awesome and b) if I didn't irrationally hate him as much as I irrationally love him). I think a lot of things would have played out much the same way regardless of how it happened; he would have gotten in touch with McNulty and asked to see the body, he would have shot Stinkum, and he would have wounded Wee-Bey.

I think after that, though, it's harder to say. He probably still would have taken shots at Avon and probably Stringer, but he might have taken more time about it. I definitely don't think he would have agreed to testify against Bird; my gut tells me that he mainly agreed to that because he knew that the Barksdale gang had already stepped outside the game by being so brutal on Brandon, and that led to him stepping outside the game and cooperating with the police. As he says when he meets McNulty in the graveyard, he's no snitch. Brandon's death motivated him to do that.

I think also he would have calmed down and moved on a bit sooner. I note in particular that when he parleys with Stringer in season one, he's pretty unimpressed with Stringer's claim that there's dead on both sides; to him, taking out Brandon was just not the same as him taking out Stinkum, for instance. But in season 2, when people tell him that Brandon's death was just part of the game, he acknowledges that his death was, but that everything else was just out of line. Maybe if it hard just been a straight shooting he would have been pretty pissed for a while, moved against those responsible, and then put it aside.

Also important to note here is that he's clearly moved on but Stringer is still able to manipulate him by bringing up Brandon -- but Stringer leaps straight for the emphasis on the torture, not on the fact that he's dead.
That got a bit longer than I intended. And yeah, maybe I think too much about this. icon_wink.gif

On that subject, though, I'm watching The Wire right now. I've just finished season 2 and I've dropped some heavy hints to friends that The Wire on DVD would make a great birthday present.

The more I play this game, the more I'm becoming obsessed with the greatness of the story and vastness of the universe inside the game. Went from not knowing a single thing about the series a week prior to ME2's release (apart from that both games had ugly covers), to an absolute nut.
I had a similar experience. I went from neither knowing nor caring about it one bit, to vanishing off the planet and emerging from the backroom three days later going, "Okay, done now, what's next??". All because someone finally made me start playing. It's really well-done. I found myself just thoroughly sucked in.
Today I was at work, and I had a nice little chat with a customer about this TV show I've been really into lately (The Wire, if anyone is interested). We discussed our favourite characters and while I secretly judged her like the pretentious wanker I am because she has such standard taste in favourite characters, I actually confessed that I agree and, well, gave her the chicken she ordered and told her to have a good day.

It kind of made my day, as pleasantly chatty customers always do. My day is pretty dull unless someone decides to entertain me with witty banter. Or, I guess, arguments about fandom.
I am pretty excited about the Hammerhead. Gonna go cry on the ruins of the Mako first, though.

Here's a handful of gnome pictures.

And not a gnome, but here's the first picture of me as a 21 year old. Excuse my haircut, it was really nice when I first got it cut, but my fringe has grown out awkwardly.
Re: Your newest purchase (6 months ago)
In fairness, I can wile away hours on The Sims 3 without even trying, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Did you know that second cousins can get married in that game?

...That's not the main reason I play.

You can actually shoot Grunt. I think that comes pretty close to pistol whipping a crew member.
I had a lot of fun shooting Kaidan and Garrus in the head in 1 when they annoyed me (which did precisely nothing except make me feel better), but in 2 with the new weapon system and friendly fire damage, I tried it again on my new and improved squad, and that just hurt them and was a waste of heat clips. I was not amused.

...

It's just possible I have some rage issues to work through.
Re: Post your Pix (6 months ago)
Oddly, BurnZ, the part I zero in on is that your sandwich looks like little more than two pieces of bread stuck together. Speaking as someone who uses approximately as much peanut butter as bread on her sandwiches, I'm quite surprised. I always thought my family were the weird ones who always treated sandwich spreads like they were rationed.

(PS. Still freaking out. Looking under everything before I touch it. Mortally afraid that a huntsman is going to leap out and try to befriend me.)

I just want to note that this is the same woman who complained that the game wouldn't let her pistol whip Kaidan and Ashley, or Liara (even though she'd not gained Liara as a team-mate yet.) She also complained about feeling bad for taking renegade options, and then gleefully told me the renegade points she got for them. Her favorite part of the first game was doing wheelies in the Mako.
Libel.

The part about pistol-whipping my crew is truth, and also about gleefully sharing how many renegade points I got for doing things I found a bit suspect, but I take umbrage at the suggestion that my favourite part of the game was doing wheelies in the Mako.

I only did that a few times, and it wasn't that fun after a while. I do miss the Mako, though. icon_cry.gif Allow me a moment to shed a tear for my fallen friend.
In a game where you could even have proper conversations with Jenkins of all people*, you'd think they could have mocked something up. Even if he only pretty much said the same thing every time like Jacob does after about three missions.

* God, I hate Jenkins -- I have funnelled all of my rage about everything else in the game to despising that one character. The other day, JackSlack asked me, if pissing on his grave was an in-game option, would I take it? I said no because I wouldn't let him have one. With me and Jenkins, it's personal.
To those who were gaming now - JackSlack just called me, and his internet has died (again!), so he has called it a night for now. Sorry about the inconvenience. icon_sad.gif

Because JackSlack dared me to...

I got it from this bookstore I love, Book Hog, for $10. I'm actually fairly psyched.

On the topic of spiders, the other day I was putting on my shoes and felt something cold and rather large in there as I was putting my foot in. Had a look inside and noticed something moving around. I thought it may have been a spider but it was a toad. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it now.
When I was 6 I put on my socks and felt something prickly at the bottom. I took off my socks and an enourmous huntsman burst out.
WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SAY THAT?

Now I won't be able to wear my boots for days, so terrified that a huntsman has parked his ass in there. icon_sad.gif

Did you guys listen to his stories? He describes a lot of good tactics, followed by something going wrong but they fight their way out, exactly what that mission entails. Your squad is no army and they all know what they've got to do. Zaeed is perfect for the job. I can't see how Jacob, who's a whiney bitch can be considered a leader who anyone respects. Hell I wish I could of left him on the space station at the beginning since he was such an uninteresting character from the very start.
Quote
In fairness, I never particularly liked Jacob as a character. On the other hand, I also never liked Zaeed, either. I would have been perfectly happy to have never picked him up, to be honest. How much you like them as characters really has no bearing on their tactical skills.

Jacob's had training and experience in tactics and leadership, with the Alliance military and with Cerberus. Zaeed is much more individualistic than Jacob is, and I can easily see him losing the respect of others in the group. Can you imagine Garrus following his lead? Thane? I think Jacob comes across as more charismatic and has a better relationship with the rest of your squad than Zaeed does, which gives him a bonus to his (otherwise arguably more weak than, say, Garrus') leadership skills.

Although... Jacob? Whiny? He still comes in at several levels above Lieutenant Kaidan "Whiny McEmopants" Alenko and Thane "Cat's In The Cradle" Krios.... icon_wink.gif
Why did you have to say that, JackSlack? Now I feel bad for selecting my favourite characters on the basis "He is funny", "He is also funny", and so on and so on.
Favourite character?

Quote
My favourite character overall is Joker. God, I love him.

My favourite character who is actually a part of your party... Mordin, definitely. One, HE SINGS GILBERT AND SULLIVAN. Two, every one of his 'go away, Shepard' comments is priceless. Three... he gives you sex advice. SEX ADVICE.

I have to give an honourable mention to Garrus and Thane, though. I am indecisive!
Tooki wrote

Also agree about Thane & Samara. They are smart characters but are lone wolves. I would of thought Mordin would of been a 'correct' choice because of his Salarian Special Forces work & wisdom. His eccentric nature seems like a deterrent though.
Quote
I think you're right that he's too eccentric - also, too squishy. I've heard that he's the one character who has a random chance of dying pretty much regardless of what you do. I guess that makes sense since he's exceeded the average life expectancy of a salarian by 25% already. He's not going to be the strongest guy in battle.

Also -- I do have a dirty little theory that regardless of who survives the suicide mission in 2, Mordin and Thane will both be dead in 3 to try to cut down on the number of continuity nods and cameos they need to do. Even though they are both immensely popular, it's not like we'd be shocked if either died - one is really old, and the other won't stop talking about his mortality.
ETA: So it turns out that I'm just pretty much repeating JackSlack. Get out of my brain, sir.
I'm going to chime in and bring down our average even further. I'm 20 (turning 21 on Wednesday).

As for the stats on the "average age of gamers", I think the point is more likely that people who identify as players of games on a survey is going to encompass a wider market of casual gamers, many of whom are likely to be older. What you're seeing here on PALGN is a group of more serious gamers, who may be a younger group, on average.

Plus, people tend to congregate with others their own age on social groups like forums, so... It just so happens that PALGN has attracted a lot of people in the 18 - 24 bracket.

I chose the Merc, he is far more experienced than the rest of them, he was the leader of one of the gangs, I forget which and is generally pretty bad arse. If he is a "wrong" choice why the hell bother releasing him as DLC.
Quote
Sure, he's an experienced leader, but you never got the impression (or at least, I never did) that he was a particularly good tactician. His idea of a good way to nab one guy is to burn down a whole factory. Someone like Garrus, Jacob or Miranda on the other hand have both leadership experience and tactical expertise. I assume that's the reason why Zaeed is a "wrong" choice. You get the reverse effect with Thane and Samara who are great tacticians but also lone wolves who aren't so good at commanding a whole squad.

No, I chose Jacob to lead my distraction team and still everyone survived. Except Chambers and Engineer Gabby, but that's because I decided to go and do some side missions after the Collectors took off with my crew.
Re: Post your Pix (6 months ago)
My friend and I have been swapping gnomes. I took her gnome to the Mass Effect 2 launch party (which got me a lot of funny looks, oddly enough), and we went together to Canberra and took our gnomes to Parliament House and the war memorial. She also took my gnome out for Australia Day.

If I ever went anywhere interesting (like on an overseas holiday) I feel like it would be even better, but in my defense, her gnome DID go into space with me. I just wish I could have taken her gnome when I went to Movie World last year, and got Batman to pose with him. That would have been EPIC.
Re: Post your Pix (6 months ago)
Nice car, MaTBoY!

Here is a picture of when my gnome last went on holiday. More forthcoming soon!

Yes, that is at the war memorial in Canberra. He's posing in front of a painting. By which I mean, having a nice holiday, surrounded by a nice view.

We have to read the novel Frankenstein for English, as a comparison text for Bladerunner, to do with 'belonging'. It's alright so far, as I'm about half way, but it's always different reading a book that was written almost 200 years ago.

Just to debunk a common misconception, 'Frankenstein is not actually the creature that was created - Frankenstein is the creator, and the monster is just 'Frankenstein's monster'.
I had to read Frankenstein for English too. We were studying "the other" at the time and comparing it to Dracula and Alien. I think one of the other classes did Bladerunner.

I really didn't like the book, though. I quite liked Dracula.

Also, when Mary Shelley was talking about the book when she was alive, she refered to the monster as 'Adam'. I still personally think it's technically correct to refer to Frankenstein's monster by the full name 'Adam Frankenstein', since the book deals so strongly with the iea of creation and parenthood - Dr. Frankenstein was his "father". But that's just me being a bit of a wanker about the whole Frankenstein/Frankenstein's monster thing. icon_wink.gif

Right now, for my book club, I'm rereading the Tomorrow series by John Marsden. I love them, they are seriously one of my favourite YA book series ever.
