Picross clone... but it actually looks kinda cool.
Re: TF2 Heavy update to be rolled out next week (2 years ago)
Just don't mark it on your Australian calendar as Tuesday. Or with anything permanent, if the other updates are any indication.

Waiting for this to release is painful. Really looking forward to it.

Re: Aquaria (2 years ago)
I wouldn't consider him to be a loser, that would be quite harsh. I was a bit caustic at getting some negativity right off the bat and I apologise. My excitement for this awesome indie game has yet to diminish.
I think I prefer to review things as I play them rather than complete the whole thing and reflect on it. Although reading over what I've just written and what I wrote previously, I feel like I'm just repeating myself and exposing a few new details.
The environment you play in is quite vast, stunningly painted, yet at the same time, a bit empty, there is only one of what you could call a "traditional" NPC the rest of the NPCs are fish, turtles and eels and the occasional spectres. So those expecting all the time action may not be too keen. It's all about discovering the story, like in the Metroid games, but instead of scanning everything in the vein of Metroid Prime there's an aquatic language. It's a simple substitution cypher and at first I was thinking "I don't want to bother translating that." yet I did and it is quite interesting. It's also one of the challenges as you aren't given anywhere a full character set, so that adds a kind of challenge that breaks the fourth wall of the game somewhat.

Re: Aquaria (2 years ago)
There's not much point writing about graphics since they can easily be looked at by someone else by playing the demo. Graphics are subjective. I like them, they've put a lot of effort in to make a cohesive style and the environments are exquisite, but those are subject to my opinion.
Hence the comparison to games with similar gameplay. Other people have played Metroid and if they love Metroid, it's quite likely they'll love Aquaria.
To your criticisms, you're right, I don't have to review things like you do. I made the link betweem Aquaria and Metroid pretty clear to give an idea of what gameplay to expect. If you don't understand how association and comparison works, you probably shouldn't be the one saying my review doesn't have this or that because it doesn't meet your own personal standards of what a review should be.
If that means it sounds like an advertisement just because I happen to like the game, then so be it. I'd gladly give this game free advertising it's that good, but it's hardly spam, since this is a reader review forum, I made the effort to make sure what I wrote was error free and succinct.

Aquaria (2 years ago)
I'll keep it short since I've yet to play the full game in its entirety, but based from the demo, this indie game is unique and awesome. The production values are probably better than a lot of commercial games, it's right up there with quality titles such as Mr. Robot and the like. A 2D side scrolling exploratory game comparative to Metroid underwater. The demo is quite a good indication of the gameplay and the full game is a mere $36!
http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/buy.html I know it says buy.html but there's a link to the demo there. It's only 60MB, so you've nothing to lose by giving it a go, but if you're a fan of Metroid and Zelda then there's plenty to love about the game, though not a lot of action to start off with.

Is Final Fantasy 3 ever coming here? Or is it already here?
Re: Australian Virtual Console games list (3 years ago)
Toejam & Earl AND Altered Beast. WOO!
Re: DS headset image revealed (4 years ago)
Looks pretty slick. It might not be an accurate guess, but the mic part looks like it's up for some bendage.
Re: Settlers announced for DS (4 years ago)
I'm a big fan of the early settlers games. Had good times on the first two, glad to see it coming to the DS! If they include multi-player and WiFi it could be solid.

Re: Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training Review (4 years ago)
I've never had any major problems with the game recognising me saying the word blue. The only trouble I've run into was rare and the other day it wouldn't register me saying black which I thought odd after having played it for several days in a row with no problems.
Re: E3 2006: Redesigned PS3 controller unveiled (4 years ago)
I can see rumble being used to great effect in FPS games, they no longer have to program in recoil for weapons, it's just there, or there may be some sort of sensitivity settings so that it's less sensitive to the rumbles? Dunno really.
Re: E3 2006: Redesigned PS3 controller unveiled (4 years ago)
Redesigned?! Save for the lower triggers, it's hardly changed at all... unless they mean re-designed from the boomerang concept.
Just lame.
Did anyone ever see any hands-on impressions about the boomerang one? It looks like it would be more comfortable to hold than chunky here.

It was announced as a Wii game though, so if anything that means the other two consoles are receiving ports and the Wii is getting the 'focus' this time around. Maybe not, but the screen is definitely a Wii one. Ubisoft said so themselves.
As for being "heavily aliased" I think the opposite, the anti-aliasing is quite good in that shot.
Re: Australian DS Lite release date announced (4 years ago)
Another reason to get the lite over the original is that the lite is ... lighter.
I've read reports about it "feeling" better in your hands for a longer ammount of time, less sore wrists and such... which is good.
And better feeling buttons & d-pad.
As for the walkie-talkie like game (which sounds pretty intriguing), you could still have that if you utilised the mic port. Or perhaps the mic can still capture sound whilst the unit is closed.

Re: Pre E3 2006: Rayman: Raving Rabbids announced (4 years ago)
Y'know, when I read about this on ign, they said that it's in development for other consoles also, so thinking back, it might not be a Wii screenshot at all.
Re: Australian DS Lite release date announced (4 years ago)
Sweet! Now all I have to do is resist spending.
Can't wait to get one. Gunna give the old one to my girlfriend.

Also remember that Nintendo isn't pushing nexgenhypermagicalHDOMFG! graphics like Sony and Microsoft.
It'll be more interesting to see how the game plays.
And WOO! @ fuzzy pink afro! The graphics are pretty decent though, I was expecting worse. And this may not be final. If they tune it more, it could look fantastic. I remember the Rayman 3 graphics on the cube being pretty good.

Re: Nintendo reveals the REAL name for Revolution (4 years ago)
Wii is genius. It rolls off the tongue far easier than xbox 360. And it's mighty fun to say. How funny will it be to walk into EB and yell "SHOW ME TO THE WII!" It'll certainly get a lot of raised eyebrow action or something. Awesome.
As a side note, in today's world, you'd never be able to create a magazine called Playboy.

Re: Updated Australian release list, 27/02/06 (4 years ago)
I've already seen Boktai 2 in EB, so how is it supposed to be released in June?!
Re: Zelda delayed yet again (4 years ago)
I wouldn't be surprised if they unveil revo controller features for it at E3 though.
Re: Big Brain Academy: new screens (4 years ago)
The replay value comes from when you do the tests more times, you get better at them and it trains your brain, from what I understand anyway. I'm sure it has a few hundred tests that you do... and rather than being a straight up test, isn't it supposed to be more like training anyway? So it's not like "Here's 100 questions, finish them now or die!" it's more like a few little exercises to do every day to expand your mind.
Re: Xbox 360 games priced? (4 years ago)
There's no way I'm paying those prices. I'd be surprised if they stay that high for more than a couple of months.
Re: Dancing Stage: Mario Mix Review (4 years ago)
Dance Stage is a great fun party game. My friends and I have had good times playing it so far. Not everybody is a DDR guru, myself being one of them, and I've found a decent challenge on hard, very hard and super hard.
I'd like to know what people's definition of a "proper" game/title is. From what I can tell, Dance Stage is as much a proper game as any of the platformers, or racing games or sport games for that matter. It's just that the game mechanics don't suit everyone's tastes, and why should they?
Also what's wrong with calling the different areas "World 1" and so on? It's a classic throwback to Mario nostalgia and fits the theme well.

Re: A Night in Fantasia 2005 (4 years ago)
I would have liked to go to this, but it's tomorrow and on a Sunday night. Glerph.

Think about it. If the controller were to respond to movement, what do you think would happen if you were shake the controller as though it were rumbling?
